It's Pumpkin Time!

We have started using our pumpkins for some fun activities. Today the students lined up everyone's pumpkins and measured how many pumpkins tall they are:

Next, we used the teacher's pumpkins to plant the seeds. This was fun experiment that goes along with our procedural text writing. We are hoping for some sprouts!!

Lastly, I created an Instagram account...follow us: @ mrspanag

Code Blue & St Math

Today we were reviewing code blue procedures in the classroom in preparation for a whole school code blue practice coming up.

I tried very hard to make it as simple and worry-free as possible but the kids brought on MANY different questions. I did my best to answere them as simply as I could. I let the students know that these emergencies are very unlikely and not tyipical but that we always have to be prepared. I also let them know that they are safe here and that I would never let anything happen to any of them.

I am so sorry these are things we have to practice and talk about. Everyone did well and seemed to be in good spirits.

Also, I am sorry about the trouble some people seem to be having logging in to ST Math. One thing I would like make sure, when entering school name, please make sure you are entering PINE GLEN (as it says on the forms) and NOT Memorial. Not sure of the specifics but I believe the license was purchased under that school name.

Please let me know if that works or you still have trouble.

Have a great evening :)

Here is a copy of the letter coming home today about homework.

1st Grade Homework

Dear Parents,
First grade homework starts today, Monday, October 6th.  Here’s what you need to know about your child’s homework:
  1. Your child must read for 20 min. each night.
  2. Your child must read any books in the book bag and do any book bag activities. (Book bag reading can count towards the 20 m in.)
  3. Two pages of math will go home each week and must be turned in on Friday.
  4. Your child can also choose to do 1, 2, or 3 other homework activities each night:  Spelling City (online), Xtra Math (online) or Flash Cards (Add and Subtract numbers within 10), ST Math (online).  Your child should spend no longer than 5-10 minutes on each of these activities.  Login information for the online homework is located on the next few pages.

Circle the star next to each homework activity your child does that night.  We will count up the stars for the class each day.  When we have collected 200 stars as a class, we earn a class prize!  The more stars kids do each night, the sooner we will earn a class prize. Reminder: non-negotiables do not earn stars. The Star Homework activities are extra/bonus.

Please note that if you are using an ipad, you DO NOT need to purchase any apps. The spelling city and STMath apps are free. For XtraMath, use the website rather than  the app. You can then save the website to the homepage of your iPad/tablet. All of these websites can also be used on computers.

Don’t have the internet? No problem!  Your child can still earn stars by practicing math facts with flashcards, or practicing trick words with flash cards.  Make it fun! Play Memory or Go Fish with the flashcards you and your child create.

PLEASE let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Happy Homework,

With the school year in full force, we've got lots to celebrate in room 111!
Today we celebrated the publishing of our first class book, Pajama Fun. We are learning to write personal narratives making sure they contain a beginning, middle, and end. Next week we will begin writing individual narratives about an event from our own lives.
We ended the week with a visit from our 4th grade partners. We completed another "getting to know you" activity, taking pictures for a book that we will create through the year together, and reading stories. Everyone worked hard and had fun!

Lastly, we will begin homework on Monday so be looking out for all of the necessary information you will need in the homework folders.

Have a great weekend and happy autumn :)
