1st graders teaching 3rd graders

Today, the first graders got to put together all they learned about whole body listening and teach some third graders about it. It went so very well! Be sure to ask your child what it means to be a whole body listener :)

Happy Halloween!

4th grade buddies

I forgot to take pictures the last time we met but I didn't this time :)
We meet with Mrs.Felton's reading class 1-2x a month and do various activities.

Today the 4th graders read a story to their 1st grade buddy and they had to cut a piece of the paper according to the directions. They had fun!

I also posted on Instagram so be sure to follow me there @mrspanag.

lessons on interrupting

This week the students have been working really hard on practicing our rules. Particularly rule numbers 1, 2, & 3 (if you don't know what they are, please ask your child). We read a book called My Mouth is a Volcano and recalled times everybody has been interrupted and how it made them feel. We also learned and discussed ways we could stop ourselves from interrupting others: breath our words out of our nose until it is our turn and breath them back in, make figure eights that Ms. F showed us last week, raise pur hand, or just wait patiently for our turn to speak. It would be very helpful to to talk about these and have your child practice some of these turn talking strategies in your everyday routines.

Tomorrow we will read Interrupting Chicken and do some follow up activities as well.

Next week we will practice our listening/following directions skills.
Stay tuned :)

Fluency Tests and Homework

Today, in your child's folder, you will find math fluency tests from the last 4 weeks. These are given every Friday throughout the year as a means to help build the students' fact fluency from 0-10. They are given 2 minutes to complete 20 problems. Right now we are focusing on addition and will start subtraction in another month or two. You should notice that your child's score gets a little better each week.
If you are interested in fun ways to help your child's fluency, I am happy to give you suggestions :)

Also, in regards to the homework, please be sure your child brings in his/her homework notebook, the menu, AND the must do math sheets on Fridays. Be sure to do the math pages listed on the menu. We assign particular pages to make sure everyone is practicing things we've already learned and not moving ahead of what is taught in the classroom.

As always, thank you for your support and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a great Monday!!

Zones of Regulation

Ms. Flaccavento came into our class today to talk about "Zones of Regulation" in regards to our feelings and behavior. She also talked about ways to calm ourselves when we are feeling anxious, angry, or upset, focusing on making a figure eight with our finger and controlling our breathing. Please be sure to ask your child for more information about these ideas to reinforce their learning. Attached is I for Marion about the Zones of Regulation and a feelings song we learned.

Homework Update

Dear Families,

It is so nice to be back in the classroom. We had a great transition last week and are in full swing in room 111!

Thank you for your patience as things get a little readjusted from Mrs. Blois to myself.

I have decided to change the homework a little bit. I am thinking it may be easier to keep the work all in one place so instead of stapling papers together, everything that needs to be written can be written in the notebook and then the students can pass in the menu paper, notebook, and any must do math sheets altogether on Fridays.

This homework menu and system is new to us this year, so your patience and constructive feedback is helpful.

Also, please make sure to follow our class if you haven’t already: mrspanagiotopoulos.blogspot.com

remind: text @cpanag to 81010

I will not be sending paper notices home from myself if I can help it. They will be sent via email, blog, or remind when possible.

Let me know if you have any questions.

I am exciting to get our collaboration for a great year underway :)
