Reading Class

We are having such a great time during our reading block!
On Fridays, we decided to do a program called Making Meaning, which we love but haven't had the time to fit in, in the past few years.
In each unit, we cover a new reading strategy through a read aloud, turn and talks, and then creating a class book based on the story we read.
Weeellllll... my readers didn't want to create a book because they all want to take their own work home in the end.
SO... Today I got the great idea to create a class read aloud video! Each time we finish our writing, I will record them reading it and put it together for you to see :) I think this will help the students become better readers and writers because there is an audience for them.
Unfortunately, I ran out of space on my iPad and didn't know so 1 student's didn't get recorded but he will just retread his and I will post it next week.

Final roots observations

Can you guess which plants were in the closet, on the window sill, or in the middle of the room? See if your child can tell you. After you view the photos, follow this link to see if you were correct:
Many of the plants got overwatered or dropped so they all didn't sprout 😆 just more info for us as scientists!

Be sure to ask your child the parts of the plant and what their function is (how does it help the plant survive). Here is a link to the information they need to know:

For future reference, you can find all of the information about our science units and expectations through the Burlington Science Center blog. The link is on the right hand side of this blog.

Tomorrow we go on a walk with Ms. Pavlicek to learn about trees we can find in our backyard and how they are a type of plant. Stay tuned.

Locker Decorating

The students had so much fun detracting their lockers on Friday morning. Hopefully the decorations will last through conferences so you can get a chance to see them in person 😉

Just a reminder from the PTO: the annual I scream Halloween party is on Friday the 28th. Children have to be registered beforehand and you can only register online. Also, don't forget to pay your dues. This money helps support social and classroom activities. You can find the link to the Memorial School PTO website on the right-hand side of this blog :)

More experiments

We are continuing to learn about plant parts and their functions. So far we've learned about the super stem and now the righteous roots. We planted seeds in clear cups so we can see the roots grow. Be sure to ask your child how the stem and roots help plants survive.

Seed cups were placed in different areas of the room. The window sill, a shelf in the middle of the classroom, and in a closet. Some students wanted to prove weather plants need sunlight in order to grow. What do you predict??

They all want to be....

SCIENTISTS!! We are having a fantastic learning experience studying our new science topic Plant Parts and Functions. Yesterday, the students led discussions about what parts are and which living and non living things have parts.

Then today, our budding scientists observed and dissected a flower. They used ipads to take photos and science journals to draw their observations, take notes, and write any ideas or questions down. Can't wait to meet tomorrow and have a group talk about what everyone noticed.

Stay tuned to see what other amazing learning experiences and experiments we will be doing in the next few days and upcoming weeks!
